Certification of Agricultural and Food Products under European Quality Schemes

CERTIND, as a certification body and control body, provides conformity assessment and certification services for agricultural and food products covered by the European quality schemes PDO, PGI and TSG, in accordance with the provisions of Regulation (EU) 2024/1143 applicable to agricultural and food products.

European quality schemes protect the names of products distinguished by their geographical origin, reputation, specific characteristics or traditional production methods, and provide consumers with guarantees regarding the authenticity, traceability and conformity of such products.

Through its activities, CERTIND supports producers, processors, producer groups and other economic operators in the conformity assessment and certification process, contributing to the protection and promotion of agricultural and food products with recognized added value at European level.

Quality Schemes

PDO - Protected Designation of Origin

This scheme applies to products whose quality or characteristics are essentially or exclusively due to a particular geographical environment, including specific natural and human factors.

Under this scheme, the relevant stages of production, processing and preparation take place within the defined geographical area, in accordance with the applicable product specification.

PGI - Protected Geographical Indication

This scheme applies to products possessing a specific quality, reputation or other characteristics attributable to their geographical origin.

At least one of the relevant stages of production, processing or preparation must take place within the defined geographical area.

TSG - Traditional Speciality Guaranteed

This scheme highlights the traditional character of a product, determined by its composition, the ingredients used or the traditional production method.

The protection granted under this scheme concerns the traditional specificity of the product, independently of a specific geographical origin.

CERTIND Services

CERTIND performs conformity assessment and certification activities for agricultural and food products through:

  • analysis of the applicable documentation;
  • assessment of conformity with applicable legal requirements and the relevant product specification;
  • verification of product traceability and, where applicable, the origin of raw materials;
  • evaluation of production processes and implemented controls;
  • verification of compliance with requirements regarding the use of protected names and labelling requirements;
  • issuance of attestations of conformity and related extracts, subject to fulfilment of the applicable requirements.


Stages of the Conformity Assessment and Certification Process

1. Submission of the Application

The economic operator submits the certification application to CERTIND together with the relevant documentation.

2. Review of the Application and Preparation of the Certification Offer

CERTIND reviews the application and the information provided by the operator, determines the applicability of the scheme and prepares the certification offer in accordance with the applicable pricing rules.

3. Contracting

The process is initiated following acceptance of the offer and signing of the contractual documents.

4. Planning of Assessment and Control Activities

CERTIND appoints competent personnel and establishes the programme for assessment and control activities, depending on the applicable scheme and the specific characteristics of the product.

5. Review of Documentation and Compliance with the Applicable Product Specification

The relevant documentation is reviewed, and the products conformity with applicable legal requirements and the relevant product specification is verified.

6. Control at the Production Site

CERTIND performs control activities at the production site in order to verify the relevant operations, traceability, implemented controls, compliance with the product specification requirements and product conformity with applicable requirements.

7. Decision-Making and Issuance of Conformity Documents

Where the applicable requirements are fulfilled, CERTIND issues the attestation of conformity and related documents.

8. Surveillance Activities

During the validity period of certification, CERTIND carries out periodic surveillance activities, including controls, in order to verify the continued maintenance of conformity.

9. Recertification

Upon expiry of the certification validity period, conformity is reassessed for the purpose of renewing certification.

What is a management system?

A management system represents the framework through which an organization sets its own policies and procedures to ensure that it can carry out all the tasks necessary to achieve its objectives and promote continuous improvement. Management systems allow an organization to establish and use best practices in conducting its own business. Management systems can be: Quality (ISO 9001), Environmental (ISO 14001), Food Safety (ISO 22000), Occupational Health and Safety (OHSAS 18001 / ISO 45001), Information Security (ISO / CEI 27001) etc., as well as combinations of these systems (integrated systems).

What is an integrated management system?

An integrated management system combines several management system standards (eg ISO 9001 + ISO 14001 + ISO 45001) into a single system to be exploited and managed more easily.

What is implementation?

Implementing a management system means establishing the processes that take place in the organization and harmonizing the organization's activity with the requirements of the reference standard(s).

What is the difference between “accreditation” and “certification”?

Accreditation: Accreditation is the formal recognition of a conformity assessment body (Certification Body) by an accreditation authority, that the Certification Body has the technical and organizational competence to perform a specific services in accordance with the technical standards and regulations described in the accreditation field.
Certification: Certification is the process by which an organization is assessed by a third party (Certification Body) to provide a written warranty (conformity certificate) that a product, process, system, or person meets the requirements of the reference standard(s).

What is the price of a certification?

Certification costs vary from one organization to another, depending on the field of activity, the number of employees, the number of locations of the organization and the number of standards for which certification is sought. For a customized offer please send the offer form.

Is the conformity certificate issued by CERTIND SA recognized in other countries?

If the certificate is issued under accreditation by CERTIND SA, the certificate should be recognized in those countries whose national accreditation bodies are signatories to the multilateral agreement EA, IAF and ILAC.

What is the validity of a certificate?

A conformity certificate is valid for 3 years, subject to annual surveillance audits. Before the certificate expires, the recertification audit takes place and the entire certification cycle is resumed.

Can a certificate be suspended/ withdrawn?

Yes. If the certified client incorrectly uses the conformity certificate(s) or the certification mark, does not allow the performance of surveillance audits or the findings of the surveillance audit is that the organization no longer complies with the requirements of the reference standard(s), the Certification Body may suspend / withdraw the certificate.

Can I get the certificate if I do not have the management system implemented?

No. If the management system in your organization does not meet the requirements of the applicable standard(s), the Certification Body will not grant you the conformity certificate(s).
